BitTorent port range 4q2k4n
Hello,
FDM is the only bittorrent client that has a port range, instead of only one port.
I am curious to know the why of such design?
Also would it be a problem to decrease the range, or lets say define a range with just one port?

I'm afraid your info about bittorrent protocol is incomplete or outdated. Bittorrent may use a range of ports, but some apps need to declare only the first port from that range.

Re: BitTorent port range 241p5z
I meant declaring ports for incoming connections. Isn't the port range 1500-1600 in FDM for incoming connections?
Are you sure that when I define only one port in uTorrent I am only declaring the first port of the range? If so then how would people be able to define port forwarding when they are behind NAT. Is the router supposed to infer the rest of the range?
As it is now I have to set forwarding from 1500 to 1600 for FDM, and only one port for uTorrent.

You should really read before posting, as it is generally recommended.
In bittorrent protocol up to version 3.2 the well known T port for BitTorrent traffic is 6881-6889 and 6969 for the tracker port.
In newer bittorrent protocol versions there are NO default ports and port forwarding is NOT required, all settings depend on your choice. You can use a range of ports or a single port, you can even use ports reserved for well known internet services (like SMTP or HTTP). FDM allows you to set whatever you want, just go to FDM options and do it.

Re: BitTorent port range 241p5z
I did not say it was required, but if you don't forward ports, than nobody will be able to connect to you, as you won't receive incoming connections. - I am sure you know this.
I also did not say that you have to use some set of default ports.
My exact question was: why does FDM offer a port range instead of a single port. I never said this was a negative thing, my exact words were "I am curious to know", you seem to offer rather evasive answers for things that don't really call for it!

Re: BitTorent port range 241p5z
Stop telling tales, please.
I am connected via router and I don't need port forwarding to use FDM as a bittorrent client. The only thing I need is to connect with a tracker port listed in .torrent file (if DHT is unavailable). If you have problems with your router, update its firmware, change its settings or change the router. And don't forget that port forwarding won't help you if your ISP uses deep packet inspection to manage network traffic.
I have already answered half of your question: FDM offers a port range because bittorrent protocol port ranges. The other half you have answered yourself: FDM offers a port range because routers/firewalls may limit available port ranges. DO read before posting, please.
I'm sorry, I can't help you more if you don't understand my simple English and don't want to follow my suggestions.

My previous answer:

Again, I did not say that torrents wouldn't work. What I said was that you won't be receiving any incoming connections, which is different from data being ed to you.

No need to follow your suggestions, I never stated to have any sort of problem with torrents, I was just asking out of curiosity why does FDM have a port range. I already got my answer thank you.
