speed is slow compared to Firefox j6b11

Reggie_459 » Mon May 25, 2015 3:27 pm

I'm using 3.9.5 build 1542, but it's been an ongoing issue for awhile now. In Firefox 36, I regularly get speeds of 170 kbps or more. But with FDM I can't much more than 115 kbps. I don't have anything set to limit speed, as far as I know anyway. Does anyone know what I can do in FDM to at least get it up to what I can get with FF? Thanks.

I was looking at my Network settings and I increased the max connections to 36 and 6 per server. Then I noticed "Ignore all restrictions" in New >Advanced was unticked so I ticked it, but neither improved things. Still limited to about 115 kbps.

Firefox uses a single connection so you should decrease number of connections rather than increasing it. Try with 2 connections per server for the start.

FDM was set to 1 connection before I changed it, but I think I figured it out. I mainly use FF to YouTube videos and they really move, so I think YouTube's servers must be pretty fast. When I started ing videos from there is when I noticed it was a lot faster than normal. I experimented with some other file s in FF and they moved about the same speed as FDM.

Youtube uses Google cloud solutions and MPEG DASH standard to provide video streaming without interrupts. FDM may youtube videos in many sections (each section may be redirected to different server) so you should better use Site Manager in FDM to play with settings for youtube (googlevideo) sites.
For comparison - Microsoft allows 8 connections with 10 Mbps bandwidth each pear so you can Windows 10 ISO with 80 Mbps speed if your connection is so fast.

For YouTube, we have set a hard-coded limit: 2 sections per file.
With 5 sections, it s 2x faster. With 10 sections, it s 3x faster. But we don't allow this, so that they don't ban FDM -agent.
