Use windows file attributes! 6nh5j

rasqual » Thu Dec 21, 2006 6:56 pm

Microsoft has a way of providing features no one uses, but which would be handly if only devs would make use of them.

In Explorer in detail view of files, it's simple with a rightclick on the column names to select further file properties to view -- "description" and the like. Several of these properties might be handy to sort on, or group by, in Explorer views.

Most managers rely entirely on their own grouping taxonomies, but if only managers would give the an opportunity to enter values for these file system properties, then write them to the file . . .

If only that were done, then any Explorer view of ed files would allow ready access to such information in the native Windows interface.

Sure would be nice if just one manager on the planet embraced Windows features no one else seems to care about. Maybe it would remind people that such features are there, and can be handy.

It would be such a simple way to integrate the product with the OS!

That could be really cool.

I know Vista has tons of details you can choose to display in Explorer (Name, Date, Size, Description)...

What always struck me was that no manager's devs -- anywhere -- have ever thought of it. If these attributes are to be used at all, the best occasion to use them is when the file is first introduced on the local file system -- not "after ing" or what-not. Thus, the most perfect application in existence to use such a feature is a manager -- and not a single one, anywhere, does.

Actually, it's worse than that. The perfect application to make use of such a feature is Explorer itself. Yet not even Microsoft's file management (common dialogs and such) provides for an easy way of inputting such information during any kind of file operation.

Any manager dev that does this will actually be responsible for implementing something Microsoft never even did!

I find the same thing with Active Directory; Microsoft built this wonderful environment, and few devs (including those on Microsoft application teams) use it at all.

Powerful features, never used. Go figure.

Hmm...a lot of information could be taken from the .metalink (if the file was ed that way) and added to the filesystem.

I'm not a big Windows fan, but at least it doesn't rewrite every single file you , that would really be a big PITA, you would never be able to do any checksums.
My thread on "append description" is a perfectly good solution to this, and I have a tool that adds this info to the description column - DescExp

The fact that MS doesn't allow you to edit the status bar, but adds 500 useless columns to the details view that noone uses is just typical Windoz bloated crap.

bump.

An additional thought, though.

It would be good if the URL would be added to the file system metadata (description) automatically. Handy.

I agree, that would be a good ide to use the existing system to store the data.

and I bileive the guest post 2 up is wrong, the way it is done the checksums would still work

I oftern use several of those "500 useless columns" (easily selecting the desired columns to show) but would use them a lot more if people/programs filled in all the apropriate info and tags. I have never once wanted to edit the staus bar.
