I don't think it's allowed by Mozilla. We need to make sure our FDM plugin is compatible with the each version of Firefox...
We plan to make auto update plugin for Firefox. Unfortunately there is no time for this currently.

Couldn't you do this at least for the beta version? Isn't it for the testing purposes, collecting the on which FF version it does work rather than restricting the maxVersion as it would be the final product. I don't think this would be against Mozilla's regulations in any way!

I just updated from 14.0.1 to the official release Firefox 15.0 with the automatic updater. Running FDM 3.9.1 BETA build 1264.
I get:
Free Manager Plugin is incompatible with Firefox 15.0
Is there a build available that Firefox 15.0 will be happy with straight away, or do we all have to do the steps in the post above?

Almost all. If you haven't had problems with FDM in Firefox 14.x and you haven't any other problems with Firefox 15 now, you don't need to reinstall FDM and play with other Firefox extensions. Deleting Firefox startup cache and editing FDM's install.rdf is a must.

I hope that the issue with install.rdf will be fixed in the next FDM version and it will be released ASAP (but I'm not a FDM developer).

If you install this add on, are you able to disable the compatibility check... this makes FDM work on both beta and nightly versions.
